MARVEL’s Mutants are back on the Big Screen…well sort of!

It’s taken far too long , but it’s finally here! The much anticipated, and oft-delayed big screen adaptation of Marvel Comics THE NEW MUTANTS is out — and it’s really good!

The final installment in the big screen cinematic films based in the “X-Men” franchise of films, directed and co-written by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) was expected as a theatrical release early in 2020 and a lead contender for one of this season’s hottest summer blockbuster tickets, but with the onset of a global pandemic having unleashed itself and many theater-goers self-isolating, 20th Century Studios decided it might make a better idea to just get the movie out to the masses via the home video market (undoubtedly it will eventually find its way to the Disney+ streaming platform).

And like a welcome inoculation to the dullness of the direct-to-video mediocracy that most have been left to endure, The New Mutants pleasantly fills the vacuum. Starring a relatively impressive cast of young Hollywood up-and-comers including Maisie Williams (HBO’s Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit), the origin story stays very faithful to the spirit of the comic book arc the film is inspired from. The adolescent mutants — gifted with strange powers from birth — band together to help a newcomer among them, Dani Moonstar (played by Blu Hunt) to battle their deepest darkest fears wrought on by the menace of a Demon Bear!

Williams is fantastically cast as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, and Taylor-Joy steals every scene she’s in as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, the younger sister of the X-Men code-named Colossus and the wielder of the arcane Soul Sword. Rounding the roster is Charlie Heaton as Cannonball and Henry Zaga as Sunspot. Given the conditions so many of us are facing in quarantine, the film’s isolated backdrop, a harrowing hospital where the five teens are the only patients, resonates easily with the audience and adds to the darkly eerie tone of the flick which is far more on a horror-slant than its sci-fi/fantasy predecessors. With Disney having acquired 20th Century, the studio that

THEIR DARK MATERIALS

The only five residents of a secret facility that is meant to protect them and others from their emerging powers, The New Mutants quickly discover that not all is at it appears when a new resident joins. Who is Dani Moonstar and what terror has she unleashed on our unsuspecting group that will forever impact their lives? The New Mutants is available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital Download.
